The Marketing Den | Social Media Marketing

Social Media Marketing is a fascinating and ever-evolving field

For this reason, I always welcome opportunities to expand my knowledge and experience in this area. Tonight, I’d been invited along to the opening night of The Marketing Den, a great and brand-new marketing workshop series combined with a fun networking event.

Tonight’s Marketing Den Masterclass was about Social Media Marketing, led by Rachel Carney of PR firm MK Things Happen.  But let’s start at the beginning…

I was invited along in my capacity as Radio Presenter at Sine FM.  In my weekly show, “Simply Fred”, I have a ‘Business Juice’ feature where I interview local business people about their business, the challenges of setting up your own business, their motivators, their ambitions etc.  The opportunity to attend a brand new networking event with a focus on marketing and, in tonight’s session, specifically on Social Media Marketing, was too good to miss!

I went along with my trusty recorder and was immediately made to feel very welcome by Sinead Buckley, the founder of The Marketing Den (in conjunction with MODE Magazines). And who wouldn’t feel welcome, when given a cupcake and a glass of champagne? Now that’s something you don’t see at every networking event!

There was great music playing in the background, people were dressed casually and the atmosphere was more that of a social gathering than a learning & networking session. There was a table to leave marketing materials for others to pick up.  What a fab idea!

During the initial networking session, I started grabbing unsuspecting souls and thrusting a mike at them to get a few soundbites for my show.  Everybody was great and I’ve got some fantastic audio clips.  What a great bunch the Doncaster business community is.  I know I keep saying it, but it’s true.

We then had a very informative and fascinating Masterclass on Social Media Marketing followed by Rachel Carney being asked questions while she was in the ‘hotseat’.  Rachel had a wealth of information to share, so regardless how much each person knew about Social Media Marketing, there was something there for everyone to benefit from.  The event then transformed back into a relaxed networking atmosphere, during which time I grabbed a few more volunteers to talk to me about their experiences of the event for my radio show.

The feedback about The Marketing Den was 100% positive from the people I spoke to.  Everyone I interviewed said they would attend the next event!

The Marketing Den takes place once a month and it costs £15 to attend.  For details and to book, visit their website: http://themarketingden.wordpress.com/the-line-up/

You can listen to my coverage of tonight’s event on my Simply Fred show on Sine FM on 102.6FM in Doncaster and everywhere else at www.sinefm.com. The interviews will be aired in my ‘Business Juice’ feature on Friday 20th July 2012 between 10am and 12 noon.  You can also listen to the podcast from the following Tuesday (ish) by going to my Sine FM Presenter Page.

Exciting times ahead! | Social Media Marketing | Freelance | Consultancy | Support

Isn’t it strange how life works sometimes?

After years of working in recruitment and ‘falling into’ the world of social media marketing through necessity, I discovered that I absolutely ADORE this.  It’s fun, it’s constantly evolving, it’s an ever-changing challenge!

As my recruitment work has slowed down lately (no surprises there!), I’ve happened upon the opportunity to obtain paid work on a freelance basis, helping a company with their Social Media Marketing (and a bit of traditional marketing, too).  It turns out that, once I showed them what I’d achieved with google & bing rankings, facebook ‘likes’ and Twitter followers for my other businesses (www.jarvisjohnson.co.uk, www.interimbank.co.uk) and for my voice-over and presenting work (www.frederikaroberts.co.uk) as well as my brand new recipes website (www.gloriouslygoodfood.com), they were absolutely blown away with what could be achieved and decided to offer me the work. So I’m now officially a freelancer and, heck, why not?  I’ve been doing this stuff, very successfully, for years, so I might as well use it to help others who don’t have the time, ability or desire to use social media to market their businesses themselves.

I’m really looking forward to this new stage in my life and hope to, alongside my paid freelancing work, take readers with me on a journey so that those of you that do enjoy tinkering on the old www can learn from my experience/tips and do the work yourselves.

Happy networking! :)
